Nearly 130,000 cars pass underneath the Valour Bridge each day, but Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Secretary Duane Daly believes few of those drivers know what it’s called.
The bridge spans Highway 417 to connect Castlefrank Road to Kanata Avenue. It was named Valour Bridge in 2007 and plaques were put on the actual bridge two years ago for pedestrians, but there was nothing to distinguish it for drivers.
“It’s been a great history lesson for kids at the nearby school to be able to go and read those plaques as they cross the bridge, but so many people who are driving by don’t know what the bridge is,” said Daly.
Yesterday, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation fixed that problem by unveiling new signs identifying the bridge to drivers approaching it on Highway 417.
Ottawa West Nepean MPP Jim Watson pointed out these signs are the latest collaboration between the Legion and MTO. In 1998, Highway 416 was named Veteran’s Memorial Highway and in 2007, the section of Highway 401 from Trenton to Toronto was renamed The Highway of Heroes.
