A Vancouver musician is free to perform her Olympic-inspired song after deciding to walk away from a licensing deal with VANOC.
The song in question, titled Sea to Skyway, was composed by Nicole Scoffield.
“The Olympics put the final touches on this song,” said Scoffield. “So, I decided to send it off to (Premier) Gordon Campbell and (Mayor) Gregor Robertson. I thought it would get the song out there.”
Scoffield said that after sending the song to Campbell and Roberston she was instructed by Campbell’s office to pass it on to VANOC CEO John Furlong. She then received an Unsolicited Proposals Agreement (UPA) from VANOC, which would strip her of her rights to the song. According to Scoffield, VANOC said she would have to sign the agreement before they would listen to it.
“I put too much of my soul into it,” she said. “I just couldn’t sign.”
Since Scoffield’s decision VANOC has changed their mind. A spokesperson for the organization said in an e-mail that they would no longer be asking Scoffield to sign any UPA at all “as all their needs for the Games have been met.”
