Vancouver transit police taking text tips from public

Transit police and Crime Stoppers have teamed up to try to create a new generation of tipsters.

As an alternative to calling, TransLink is encouraging people to text in tips of suspicious or criminal activity.

By capitalizing on the popularity of text messaging, transit police hope to get younger generations involved.

“We find a lot of people want to remain anonymous on the train and don’t want to be heard calling the police,” said Sgt. Tom Seaman.

“(Texting) is the way (younger generations) like to communicate so we’re hoping it will also inspire them to communicate this type of information when they need to.”

Transit police stress people should still call 911 in case of an emergency.

More information will be posted on Crime Stoppers and transit police’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
