Victims of ambulance crash longtime medics

The paramedics killed when their ambulance plunged into a lake on Vancouver Island have been identified as two Tofino residents, one of whom was recently widowed and preparing to retire.

Ivan Polivka, 65, and Jo-ann Fuller, 59, were killed early Tuesday after their vehicle went off Highway 4 and down a steep cliff into Kennedy Lake between Tofino and Port Alberni.

Polivka had worked with the service for 14 years and was widowed last year when his wife died of cancer. Fuller, a 23-year veteran, was married to a local school district official.

The B.C. Ambulance Service is investigating with RCMP and WorkSafe B.C.
