Tips from Boston Police:

Police advise people to always be aware of their surroundings, and to try to stay in well-lit or heavily populated areas.

They advise people not to be distracted by smartphones or headphones and to let a trusted person know where you are going. They also advise people to carry themselves with confidence and to avoid looking like a victim, meaning that they should be assertive and not allow anyone to violate their personal space.
