Video: Lorde gets Extreme in 2009

Lorde is nominated for three big Grammy awards next Sunday. We’re posting this vid of her as a precocious 12-year-old (as if being a precocious 17-year-old right now isn’t enough) to celebrate her nomination for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. How she wasn’t nominated as Best New Artist and James Blake was, is beyond us. We wrote about him years ago!

The clip above is funny because even as a pre-teen who goes by her given name of Ella Yelich-O’Connor, she looks pretty much like the Lorde who is famous now. It’s not to say that she now looks like a 12-year-old, but that her look is so there already!

“I think we brought a bit more of the energy, and the big stage, it really makes a difference,” she says while being interviewed after her band Extreme (not to be confused with the “More Than Words” band) performed at a talent show. And if you thought Lorde’s choice to do a Replacements cover was surprising, listen to her perform tunes by the metal band Rainbow and The Cult.
