VIDEO: Men walk around Moscow holding hands, are verbally and physically harassed
A viral video is making it’s way around the Internet showing just how extreme the culture of homophobia is in Russia despite the progress made for LGBT people in the Western world.
The video takes inspiration from last year’s “10 hours of walking as a woman in NYC” with a secret camera recording two men walking through Moscow holding hands.
Inspired by the recent nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States, the pair explain they “decided to check how people in Moscow, Russia [would] react to a gay couple.” They then take each other’s hand and proceed to stroll through the city’s streets.
The video shows the couple receiving everything from skeptical looks from strangers to physical confrontations.
Most of the passersby, however, simply verbally attack the men.
The video ends with a man breaking up the two with his body and cuts to black.
