Just when you thought it was safe to turn away from YouTube, they go and do this. The bastards.

If you're a news junkie, this is like putting a mountain of rocks in front of a crack addict: The Associated Press and British Movietone have uploaded half a million historic news videos, from frontline war footage to horrid tragedies, like the 1937 Hindenburg disaster.

Tragic as it was, we must confess the news reel of the German dirigible exploding is one of our favorites.

But there's so much more, like sideshow zanies, celebrity scandal, and historic heroes and sheroes, like aviator Amelia Earhart.

Be warned, though: Once you start watching, it may be hard to stop. At least come up for air to check with your favorite news site now and then.

Besides the Hindenburg (up top), a selection of others follow.
