America’s Next Top Model aired an episode this week that was utterly shocking.
The models were instructed to pose in a variety of positions using props and make-up to make it seem as if they were victims of a brutal murder.
Given that Western military forces are in Afghanistan ostensibly protecting women’s rights, it is shocking to see this type of program on television and to see it presented in such a blatant yet innocuous manner.
While we are fighting for women’s rights overseas we might want to also focus on the symbolic violence against women in the media, which glorifies, as it clumsily attempts to sexualize, the real violence women face all over the world.
