Around 15,000 music lovers braved a weekend of extreme weather at the Virgin Festival in Burnaby to catch rock greats such as Ben Harper, Sonic Youth and Metric.
Saturday night’s final act, the Roots, were rained out after a massive thunder and lightning storm closed down the event, but yesterday started with sunshine and hot weather that peaked at around 30 C.
Andrew Bridge, director of Virgin festivals, said the fans made the event great because they were so easygoing, just like they were in 2007, the last time the festival was in town.
“It was freezing and raining last (festival at Thunderbird Stadium in 2007) and the fans brought it,” he said. “Fans from B.C. are great.”
Bridge said it was special to see Jarvis Cocker perform, since he was with Pulp when they performed at the first Virgin Festival in the United Kingdom 14 years ago.
“He’s one of the creators of what we had (yesterday),” he said.
Jada Ste. Marie of Vancouver was at the show on Saturday and yesterday, and said she was most excited to see Metric.
“It’s just nice to be outside,” she said, adding that she kept cool by dousing her feet with water and staying still.
