Volunteers making Charlestown safer

A small army of dedicated residents armed with shovels and maps took to the streets of Charlestown yesterday to help dig out buried fire hydrants.

Some of the hydrants, especially ones along Bunker Hill Street, could barely be seen through the mounds of snow. Firefighters will shovel out what they can — but unlike sidewalks, no one is held responsible for an unshoveled hydrant.

“There are people that can’t get out and shovel their hydrants, and there are people that haven’t heard the message [to shovel] yet,” said Pat Dever, a lifelong Charlestown resident, between heaves of shoveled snow.
