Mayor Marty Walsh has announced a series of transportation initiatives Wednesday that will bring protected bike lanes to a stretch of Commonwealth Avenue and increase the number of mobile-app friendly parking meters He also called for the elimination of towing cars who interfere with street sweeping.
The mayor’s transportation plan includes revamping Comm Ave from the B.U. Bridge to Packard’s Corner. The project is designed to have a “sizeable separation” between bikes and cars at intersections to reduce the “right hooks,” where a car turns right into a cyclist that is continuing straight down the road. Additionally, Walsh announced that the Boston Transportation Department is making 8,000 parking meter spaces in the city payable through mobile phone or credit card.
Walsh is also filing a City Council ordinance that proposes eliminating towing for street sweeping and increase the fine for not moving a vehicle from $40 to $90.
The proposal calls for a pilot program to be tried out in one neighborhood so that the city can study and determine whether the initiative would work in multiple areas of Boston.
