Wandering bear cub to be set free

A black bear cub captured by conservation officers after wandering around an East Vancouver neighbourhood on Saturday night will likely be returned to the wild at the end of this week.

The animal, which is believed to be about 11/2 years old, is staying at Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley. It appears to be uninjured after being hit by a car, according to animal care supervisor Renee Mayne.

“All limbs seem to be working, nothing internal is happening,” Mayne said yest- erday. The bear was originally spotted near the PNE before it was struck by a car and ran into a backyard. Conservation officers shot it with a tranquilizer before taking it to Critter Care.

According to Mayne, the agency has cared for 15 bears over the past year. Most were cubs orphaned by their mothers after they were hit by cars or became “problem bears.”
