Watermelon marks the sweet spot for fighting hypertension

Watermelon is one of those super foods.

It’s low in calories, high in fibre, packed with vitamins, fun to eat — and sweet to boot.

Now, researchers at Florida State University have found that juicy, red watermelon has another health punch — eating it regularly has the potential to help prevent hypertension.

This is important because hypertension — known as the ‘silent killer’ — is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke.

In a small study, scientists fed watermelon extract every day for six weeks to people with pre-hypertension, which means slightly elevated blood pressure.

All nine of the subjects had lowered blood pressure at the end of the study. Authors are suggesting a larger study to test the power of this functional —and delicious — food.
