One of Mayor Martin Walsh’s more pleasant duties this winter was cutting the ribbon on yet another South Boston apartment building: Waterside Place. This 350,000-square-foot mixed-use space was built on three acres of land between Congress and Summer Streets, adjacent to the MBTA Silver Line Station and the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, which is owned by Massport. The company behind Waterside Place is the Drew Company, a Boston-based real estate development, management and consulting firm. In fact, the Drew Company developed the first buildings in the neighborhood, the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center Boston Complex, helping move the Seaport away from its utilitarian past of railway sidings and fish piers.

“For Drew Company President, John E. Drew, developing in the Seaport District made sense – opening up waterfront property to the city of Boston, attracting tourism and convention business into the area,” says the Drew Company’s Client Relations and Global Services
representative, Rie Sugihara.

Since its founding in 1982, the Drew Company has developed significant spots like the Bayside Exposition Center, Constitution Plaza, and what was once grandly known as the Great Woods Center for Performing Arts. It’s better known these days by various corporate sponsored monikers, the latest of which is the Xfinity Center.

As for Waterside Place, it’s walking distance to another seasonal arena that keeps changing its name: the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion, as it’s now known. Not to mention, of course, some of the city’s hottest new restaurants and bars.

“The Drew Company believed that this area would become a vibrant neighborhood of Boston,” adds Sugihara, “but certainly did not predict that the rate of growth would be as rapid as we have seen it to be.”
