Webb Simpson nervously watched Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell finish their rounds at The Olympic Club in San Francisco late Sunday.
But his nerves were calmed when Furyk landed in a bunker on 18 and was unable to make a realistic play at a birdie and McDowell was also unable to come up with any late magic. The American Simpson had four birdies in a five-hole stretch to capture the U.S. Open title. It was just his second time playing in the U.S. Open.
Simpson had finished the day early, 2-under on Sunday and 1-over for the tournament (281).
Michael Thompson tied finished for second with a strong final day, shooting a 67 to finish 282.
Thompson was outstanding in both bookend days as he took the lead in Thursday’s first round with a 4-under-par-66.
Tiger Woods finished 3-over-par for the tournament after a strong start on Thursday and Friday.
