Weekend lockdown downtown

The area surrounding the World Trade Center will be closed off Saturday night, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday while he briefed the public on what the police are doing to prepare for the 9/11 ceremony on Sunday.

The area from West Street to Broadway, and from Murray Street to Cortland Street, will be “frozen” Saturday evening, Kelly said.

“In spite of bin Laden’s death, there is no decrease and no contraction to the threat we face,” warned James Waters, the NYPD’s assistant counterterrorism chief.

Yesterday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said there are currently no credible threats against the U.S. for the 9/11 anniversary, but Kelly said he still isn’t taking any chances.

More than 450 cameras will monitor the WTC site with a live feed.

Thousands of officers — including police divers checking piers in the Hudson River, snipers, radiation detectors and hostage negotiators — will be on hand to secure the area for Sunday, when President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush will attend the ceremony.
