Weiner interns featured as supporters in new TV spot

In another sign of his campaign’s flagging fortunes, Anthony Weiner has resorted to featuring current and former interns in the staple role of “ordinary New Yorker” in his ads.

A 30-second TV spot released Tuesday spotlights 18-year-old Joel Acevedo of Staten Island, who says he’ll be supporting Weiner when he votes for the first time. The ad fails to disclose that he actually works for Weiner’s campaign. As the Daily News notes, Acevedo’s LinkedIn profile lists one of his jobs as “Internship at Anthony Weiner for Mayor.”

Another supporter featured in the video, Mary Elizabeth Elkordy of Queens, also volunteered with the former congressman as a press intern in a past campaign.

On Wednesday, a New York Post story alleged that Weiner had started hiring actors to flesh out the crowd at campaign events — a claim he was quick to deny, calling it a “hoax.”
