Westworld season 3: Everything we know right now

westworld season 3

Did you follow the second season OK? The creators got some backlash for confusing many viewers throughout the season, though they stand by their episodes. “We know that our show requires people to lean forward a little bit and pay attention and maybe hold off on going to make that sandwich for another five minutes,” Jonathan Nolan, co-creator of the series, told The Hollywood Reporter about the reaction to the second season. They’re Ok with what’s happening, and a large section of their fan base is too. We’re guessing you count yourself among those numbers since you’re here hoping for details about Westworld season 3. Although the creators are tight-lipped about potential spoilers, here’s everything we know about the next installment of the series right now.

Westworld season 3 plot

You already know that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have set the stage for a majority of the third season to take place outside of the park. But does the scenery change mean there will be a corresponding shift in the dynamics of the show? Nolan calls the third season “a radical shift.” The hosts are not human, he reminded us when talking to The Hollywood Reporter, and therefore they “have a different version of mortality, a different outlook.” In that way it’s difficult for us as viewers to predict what will happen because “there is a longer view here, a larger set of goals” for these characters. It might be vague, but it seems the takeaway is to expect the unexpected.

It’s also pretty safe to assume that the relationship between Bernard and Dolores will take center stage. Now that the two hosts with a history are taking up opposing sides in the battle waged in Westworld (and soon to be beyond the borders of the park), their dynamic will be even more significant. Knowing Nolan and Joy, too, they’ll throw some mind-bending curveballs at us.

Speaking of which, don’t expect the creators to stop playing with our perception of time. “We just love the ability to play in perceptual terms with the hosts being immortal,” Nolan told Entertainment Weekly when talking about the upcoming season. But they’re going to wade you into the scenery change, at least. Joy talked about how the show isn’t nearly done with the parks when she talked to THR about the upcoming season. And, yes, in case you’re wondering, they are eventually going to introduce those three other parks we haven’t seen yet.

Westworld season 3 cast

The biggest news on this front so far is that Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad fame, is joining the cast for Westworld season 3. No word yet on what character he’ll play, or whether he’ll end up being a Host or a human, but Metro will update you if and when details are released. For now, rest assured he brings his strong acting chops to an already impressive cast.

So what about Tessa Thompson? Her character, as you remember, was killed off in the last season — but they assured THR that you haven’t seen the last of her. “We always knew that we were going to do this reveal and let her expand into this new role,” Joy said about Thompson. “We have a very diabolical arc for her planned out. Part of the fun for the character will be self-realization. She will be realizing the things we know about who she is.”

Westworld season 3 trailer

There isn’t an official trailer out for Westworld season 3 quite yet, but Metro will update this story as soon as one’s available from HBO.

Westworld season 3 release date

The Westworld season 3 release date isn’t set in stone yet. They’ve made no announcement on when we can expect new episodes, though it seems like we probably won’t see the third chapter of the series until 2020. As you read above, cast additions are still being made, which means they’re not filming yet. Add in time for filming, editing and post-production work and 2020 seems like a likely end date for all those steps. It’s also in keeping with the pace for the series so far. Almost two years passed between the finale of the first season and the air date of the season two premiere.
