Whale debate already closed: Aquarium

The Vancouver Aquarium said it’s applauding the Park Board’s decision not to ask voters during the next election if whales should be kept in captivity.

“The community has already spoken on this issue loudly and clearly,” said Aquarium president John Nightingale.

In 2006, the facility consulted with the community on a proposed expansion, which included feedback on rules governing whales and dolphins in Stanley Park.

“The majority of people in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland (supported) the Aquarium having whales and dolphins in Stanley Park,” Nightingale said.

The Aquarium does not capture cetaceans from the wild.
