As the big guns of the movie business ramp up for the busy Oscars season, the New York Film Academy has compiled data on the gender breakdown of the movie industry that…is kind of a bummer. Using data from a variety of sources, the infographic takes a snapshot of the kinds of roles women play in films, their salaries, and also points readers in the direction of positive role models in film, like writer/director Jill Solloway and Kathryn Bigelow, the only female director to have won an Academy Award (in 2008, for “The Hurt Locker.”)
Though the infographic does offer some sad truths — roughly one in three women in films between 2007-2012 appeared scantily clad or partially nude, or that according the top ten highest paid actresses earned a collective $181 million in comparison to the $465 million made by men — it does what infographics do best: it make comparisons easy to understand.
