What OkCupid Users in D.C. Say About Love and Money

Daters in the D.C. metro area might need to step up their game if they want to find a match. NerdWallet and OkCupid found that women and men there are split when it comes to the importance of their date’s money — but there’s little patience for a lack of ambition.

In an online survey conducted by the dating website, D.C. area OkCupid users revealed the role of wealth in their potential partners. Among men who were asked, 40.6% said that wealth was “not important at all” to their relationships, while only about 21% of women said the same. By contrast, 43.9% of D.C. women and almost 38% of D.C. men found money to be “somewhat important.”

Men and women are more on the same page when it comes to having a partner who outearns them. A little more than 54% of male OkCupid users in the D.C. area who were surveyed said they’d be “very comfortable” if their significant other made more money than they did. And 50.6% of women concurred.

D.C. users also agree that ambition is important. A solid chunk of each gender who were asked— 31.2% of men and 44.6% of women — said that they wouldn’t be able to tolerate a partner who was content withhis or her minimum-wage job anduninterested in higher-paying work. Some 30.5% of men and 22.4% of women said that a lack of ambition bothered them, but it was ultimately none of their business. Only 6.4% of female D.C. users who were surveyed said they wouldn’t mind this situation, while 13.2% of male users said the same.
