What to expect on your evening commute after today’s subway power outage in Midtown

ConEd power outage in Midtown derails morning rush-hour commute.

Update, 4:25 p.m.: Service has resumed on the B, C, D, E, F and M train lines after this morning’s Con Ed power outage at the 7th Avenue subway station in Midtown — but New Yorkers can expect delays on their evening commute.

E, B and D trains will bypass 7th Avenue-53rd Street in both directions, the MTA said.

The outage, which began just before 7:30 a.m., disrupted service all over the city, and resulted in a mob scene as many New Yorkers were left stranded in subway stations.

The outage led to loss of signals, escalators, communictaions and station lighting.

The disruption was so massive that Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered the New York State Department of Public Service and the MTA to immediately investigate Con Ed’s equipment failure.

“This was completely unacceptable,” Cuomo said in a statement Friday afternoon. “The New York City subway system is the lifeblood of the city and a critical means of transportation for millions of people … our investigation will address all aspects of today’s events to get to the bottom of what happened.”

With several train derailments at major hubs in recent weeks, with the most recent on Tuesday, what happened this morning seems to be just another day in the life of a commuter in New York City.
