Does watching someone’s marriage implode make for great TV watching? For me, it makes me want to down a giant vodka smoothie, especially when young children are involved. However, the show runners at “True Tori” (as well as the publisher of Us Weekly in a timed cover story) think mining Dean McDermott’s cheating on wife Tori Spelling is hot stuff indeed.
On last night’s premiere of Lifetime’s “True Tori,” McDermott comes clean about having an affair in December with a 28-year-old in a filmed (!) marriage therapy session with Spelling. “My worst nightmare is what I did. Absolutely, I cheated on my wife,” he tells the therapist. “I wasn’t attracted to her. It was just like a warm body. Sex was an escape, just like drugs and alcohol.”
But then he kind of blames the affair on his bad sex life with Spelling. “We had sex once every two weeks. It wasn’t fantastic,” he said of what occurred in their marital bed.
The two are parents to four children — Liam, 7, Stella, 5, Hattie, 2, and Finn, 20 months.
For her part, Spelling seems to be milking the cheating for all it’s worth — she appears on the cover of this week’s Us Weekly in an exclusive story “about her own traumatic experience with discovering the affair.”
I really hope these two took their kids aside and told them that this was all an elaborate ruse to help pay for their college educations. “OK, children. Mommy and Daddy are going to go on national TV to air a crazy amount of dirty laundry on national television. Mommy is also going to appear on the cover of a tabloid magazine about how your father cheated on her. We’re sorry for the incredible amount of exposure and the embarrassment this will cause you but you need to go to college so you don’t end up like us — fame hungry blood suckers who will sell a devastating event from our lives to the highest bidder.”
