Where to ‘treecycle’ your Christmas trees in NYC

Christmas is over and it’s time to make some space in your living room, so the city is asking you to “treecycle.”

The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Sanitation and GreeNYC have come together for MulchFest 2016 this January.

On Jan. 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. New Yorkers can bring their holiday trees to designated areas throughout the five boroughs and recycle the trees into wood chips.

A total of more than 30,000 trees were recycled last year, and the city wants to break that number.

“There are countless ways we can care for our parks, and MulchFest is one of the simplest and most fun,” said Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP,NYC Parks Commissioner. “With nearly 80 locations to drop off your tree this holiday season, we hope to create more mulch in 2016 than ever before.”

The wood chips are later used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens throughout the city, but people are able to also take their own bag of mulch home.

If you can’t make it to the “chipping locations,” you can also bring the trees to drop-off sites from Jan. 2 through Jan. 10 and the recycling will be done for you.

The Sanitation Department will also be doing special curbside collections for the trees from Jan. 4 through Jan. 15.

Before any trees are recycled, people are asked to remove all lights, ornaments and netting.
