It’s pretty common knowledge that Taylor Swift’s syrupy love songs and scorching breakup anthems are about her real, and often famous, boyfriends — such common knowledge, in fact, that playing “guess the ex” for each new Swift single is a beloved pastime for all upstanding Americans. But what do the exes in question think about having their romances immortalized in song? At least one is cool with it and at least one is, well, not.
“I heard from the guy that most of ‘Red’is about,” Taylor Swift told New York Magazine. “He was like, ‘I just listened to the album, and that was a really bittersweet experience for me. It was like going through a photo album.’ That was nice. Nicer than, like, the ranting, crazy e-mails I got from this one dude. It’s a lot more mature way of looking at a love that was wonderful until it was terrible, and both people got hurt from it — but one of those people happened to be a songwriter.”
Aaaand it’s time to play our favorite game! Who’s the mature ex and who’s the crazy ex?Jake Gyllenhaal seems like he’d be a grownup about things, and much of Taylor’s album “Red” is rumored to be about him. As for the mad emailer, I’d say that sounds like John Mayer’s style, but in that case both parties would be songwriters, not just one. Unless “one of those people happened to be a songwriter” is a subtle dig at Mayer’s musical chops? Man do I love this game.
