The girlfriend of James “Whitey” Bulger pleaded not guilty this morning
to harboring and aiding the alleged South Boston mob boss.
Catherine Greig, 60, was indicted earlier this month and charged with conspiracy to conceal and harbor a fugitive.
The brief hearing took about 5 minutes after Greig waived the reading of the indictment.
Dressed in a blue prison jumpsuit, Greig gave brief answers to the
judge’s questions and when asked for her plea replied “not guilty.”
When she walked in to the courtroom in hand and ankle cuffs, Greig smiled at her sister who again was seated in the front row.
Greig’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, said he is continuing with his effort to have her released on bail.
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Reddington said he believes she will get bail.
“Where is she going to go?” he said. “She wants to put this behind her.”
He added that she is being treated well while behind bars and talks to her sister.
Greig is due back in court next month.
