WHL Roundup: A look at Saturday’s games

Setting up goals is what Justin Maylan does best.

Maylan picked up two assists as the Prince Albert Raiders defeated the host Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-3 on Saturday in Western Hockey League action.

The 20-year-old centre has picked up at least one assist in six straight games and has 13 total over that span.

He now has 49 for the season in 50 games played.

Josh Morrissey scored two goals for the Raiders (17-30-3), Mike Winther and Shane Danyluk had a goal and two assists each while Logan McVeigh and Tyler Yaworski added single goals.

Anthony Bardaro chipped in with four assists.

Tyler Kizuik led the Hurricanes (19-32-1) offensively with two goals while Nick Buonassisi scored the other.

Cole Holowenko made 34 saves for the win as Liam Liston allowed six goals on 35 shots in defeat.

Prince Albert went 2 for 4 on the power play while Lethbridge was 1 for 6.

Elsewhere in the WHL, it was: Moose Jaw 5, Swift Current 2; Saskatoon 8, Regina 1; Vancouver 3, Edmonton 2; Calgary 5, Medicine Hat 2; Brandon 3, Red Deer 2; Everett 4, Prince George 3; Portland 8, Seattle 3; Spokane 5, Kootenay 4 (OT) and Kamloops 5, Victoria 1.

At Lethbridge, Alta., After a scoreless first period, Prince Albert scored three straight goals to open up the second.

Yaworski scored at 1:34, McVeigh followed up with a power-play goal at 4:17, then Winther scored again with the man advantage at 9:51.

Kizuik and Buonassisi each scored for Lethbridge, at 12:22 and 17:22, but Morrissey added another for the Raiders to make it 4-2 heading into the final 20 minutes.

Morrissey opened the third period with his second goal of the game at 1:09 and Danyluk followed him up at 4:52 for a four-goal advantage.

Kizuik added his second of the game, by way of power play, at 14:45.

At Moose Jaw, Sask., Justin Kirsch scored once and added three assists as the Warriors (31-14-6) picked up their sixth win in their last seven outings by beating the Broncos (19-26-5).

Blades 8 Pats 1

At Saskatoon, Josh Nicholls, Brett Stovin and Darren Dietz scored two goals apiece as the Blades (30-19-1) crushed Regina (26-19-6).

Giants 3 Oil Kings 2

At Edmonton, Anthony Ast scored the winning goal early in the third as Vancouver (29-19-3) edged the Oil Kings (33-12-6) for their first win in three outings

At Medicine Hat, Alta., Calgary (30-17-3) was perfect on the power play, going 3 for 3, as they defeated the Tigers (30-17-4) for their fifth straight win.

At Red Deer, Alta., Ryan Pulock and Mark Stone had a goal and an assist each as Brandon (25-24-3) beat the Rebels (22-22-5) for their first win in three games.

Silvertips 4 Cougars 3

At Prince George, B.C., Joshua Winquist scored two goals as Everett (12-30-9) dropped the Cougars (15-31-2) to last place in league standings.

Winterhawks 8 Thunderbirds 3

At Kent, Wash., Sven Bartschi and Brendan Leipsic had two goals and an assist each as Portland (33-14-3) defeated Seattle (18-27-2).

Chiefs 5 Ice 4 (OT)

At Spokane, Wash., Brenden Kichton scored the winning goal as the Chiefs (27-14-7) earned at least one point in their sixth straight game by defeating Kootenay (27-15-8).

Blazers 5 Royals 1

At Victoria, Tim Bozon scored once and set up one more as Kamloops (35-11-4) regained top spot in the league standings by defeating the Royals (16-29-5).
