Who is Cristiano Ronaldo and why should I care about his ugly statue?

An airport in Madeira, Portugal, nearly broke the internet this week when it unveiled a Cristiano Ronaldo statue.

Sure, it’s big news that the airport is now known as Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport after its native son and famous footballer, but it’s the statue, a bust, really, that pretty much drew all the attention away from Ronaldo’s big moment.

His intended likeness looks nothing like him and, apologies to sculptor Emanuel Santos, it’s a little off-putting, especially given that Ronaldo, 32, is known almost as much for his boyish good looks as he is for being one of the world’s greatest footballers.

Here are four fast facts you should know about Ronaldo — and that statue.

1. Ronaldoplays for Spanish football club Real Madrid and the Portugal national team.

2. With four, he holds the record for having won the most Ballon d’Or, an award given annually to the best player from the previous season.

3. His full name is Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. His father gave him “Ronaldo” as his second name when he was born in 1985 because then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan was his favorite actor.

4. About his Cristano Ronaldo statue, sculptor Emanuel Santos, told MailOnline that Ronaldo did not sit for him, so he had to use photographs. He did said that when he was shown the bust before this week’s reveal, the footballer asked for “some wrinkles to be changed” and its face “to be thinned out a bit” but he “gave it the go-ahead.”
