HBO’s “True Detective” took the police procedural highbrow. Instead of wooden acting, formulaic plots, and a different female corpse every week, “True Detective” brought us great performances by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, one knotty, decade-spanning mystery, and a different female corpse every 10 minutes. It was a huge hit.

However, the series’ decade-long structure made it next to impossible for leadsMcConaughey andHarrelson to return for a second season (plus they’re pretty busy being movie stars). “True Detective” writer Nic Pizzolatto confirmed this week that Season 2 will ditch the Louisiana setting entirely and start fresh with a new cast. “It takes place in California — not Los Angeles but some of the much lesser-known venues of California — and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in Season 1,” he told NPR.

Pizzolatto says that the new season of “True Detective” will have three leads instead of two. According to unofficial casting breakdowns obtained by Deadline, the three characters you’ll soon be obsessed with are afortysomething male detective/cop, atwentysomething male cop, and – be still my heart – athirtysomething female corpse detective.

So who will the new cast be? Rumor had it that Jessica Chastain would play a role, but she’s since confirmed that she turned it down. Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin, and Taylor Kitsch have also been mentioned. However, Pizzolatto says it’s too soon to discuss.“The characters are all new, but I’m deeply in love with each of them,” he said on NPR. “We’ve got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we’ll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months.”
