The Patriots offense appears to be as weak as it has been at any time since the 2006 season when the likes of Reche Caldwell, Doug Gabriel and Jabar Gaffney were among Tom Brady’s “favorite” targets.

It’s clear that the Pats are in clear need of an upgradeearly in the 2013 season. Adding, arguably, the best tight end in football should absolutely help matters.

Rob Gronkowski is said to be “50-50,” according to an ESPN report, to play this Sunday against Tampa Bay (1 p.m., FOX). The big tight end missed the entire preseason and the first two weeks of the regular season following back and forearm surgeries.

Gronkowski had been well on his way to a Hall of Fame caliber career before injuries disrupted his 2012 season. Number 87 set the single season record for touchdowns by a tight end in 2011.
