Police have confirmed a 46-year-old man wanted for murdering his mother in Winchester has been arrested in North Carolina.

Matthew McAveeney has been wanted for armed assault with intent to murder after his mother, Barbara McAveeney was found dead during a well-being check at a Swanton Street home in Winchester on October 14.

Tuesday night, Winchester Police Chief Kenneth C. Albertelli confirmed McAveeneyhad been arrested in Belmont, North Carolina. A Winchester detective, along with representatives of the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, will travel to that jurisdiction “as soon as possible, in order to begin the process of returning Mr McAveeney to Massachusetts to account for his alleged crimes,” according to the chief.

“I am pleased with the amazing level of cooperation and hard work shown by police across multiple jurisdictions, who worked together to ensure that this alleged killer would not remain on the loose. This was a horrible crime, and all we can do as police officers is ensure that justice is served,” said Albertelli through a statement.

McAveeney isalso wanted for assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon resulting in serious bodily injury, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person 60 years or older and assault and battery and two counts of cruelty to animals.
