The MBTA’s Kingston station will be getting a big boost of energy starting next month, as construction is scheduled to begin on a wind turbine to power parts of the facility.
According to T spokesman Joe Pesaturo, General Manager Rich Davey announced that a contractor has been selected to construct the 100 kilowatt turbine at the Commuter Rail Layover in the South Shore station.
Out of eight companies that bid, SPS New England offered the lowest project cost at $334,334.
The project is being funded with federal stimulus monies.
The turbine is expected to power up to 65 percent of the stations energy supply, pushing power out to the parking lot, platform lighting and plug-ins for locomotives.
Pesaturo said turbine will be constructed on a parcel of land on the north side of the commuter rail tracks between the maintenance and substation structures.
According to Davey, the 120-foot-high wind turbine will be finished by next year.
A second wind turbine is scheduled for construction next year at the MBTA’s Bridgewater Commuter Rail Station.
“It’s estimated that these turbines will save the MBTA about $100,000 annually in electricity costs,” said Davey.
