Wine-tasting fundraiser for firefighters

A month ago it would have cost you much more than $25 to drink from North Vancouver wine expert David Scholefield’s million-dollar collection.
But yesterday he was offering samples, salvaged from the ruins of his home after it burned down two weeks ago, at a fundraiser for the Firefighter’s Burn Fund.
“We lost everything … we’re out there standing in our boxers at 7 a.m., but it makes you profoundly aware of how lucky you are (to be alive).”
He said 80 per cent of his wine was vaporized, but 120 of the surviving bottles were uncorked and poured for roughly 200 guests, who donated around $25 at the door.
Dee Anand, a friend of the family and the owner of Savory Coast restaurant on Robson Street, which hosted the event, said the wine was perfectly drinkable, although some tasted a bit oxidized.
