Wines worth splurging on

I’m putting our contest search for the best values on hold again this week because there are some not-to-be-missed treats coming your way this Saturday, courtesy of LCBO Vintages department.

I don’t usually write about $25 or even $17 wine because they seldom deliver, but this is one time to go on a splurge.

A new Niagara winery has created an excellent edition of this wine for only $25 — it’s OK to use the ‘only’ word when discussing Pinot Noir. Clos Jordanne’s winemakers Thomas Bachelar and Isabelle Meunier will be pouring their wines at Summerhill LCBO this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The second reason to visit a Vintages location this Saturday is the array of wonderful reds at $16.95. Dare to try something new — all of the following are rich.

Starting in Italy, meet Tedeschi Valpolicella. It has the richness and warmth of Ripasso while retaining a lively spirit.

Mas Janeil has the drinkability of a Rhône wine with more flesh and curves. It is crafted to be as appealing as your favourite Shiraz.

Spains’s Bodega San Gregorio’s bright flavours are not masked in oak. For this wine, bring on the rack of lamb!

Finally an unusually good and appealing Californian Cabernet. Jekel is mellow, seductive and full of charm. Think Zin and fun times with beefy foods.
