Winona Ryder claims Johnny Depp wasn’t abusive with her

Johnny Depp has at least one friend, and amazingly it’s an ex. In the wake of allegations of “verbal and physical abuse” from Amber Heard, Winona Ryder has stepped out and said that — while noting that she’s not calling the actress a liar — she has trouble squaring her memories of dating him back in the early ’90s with accusations that paint him as a bottle-throwing monster.

“He was never, never that way towards me. Never abusive at all towards me,” Ryder told Time. “I only know him as a really good, loving, caring guy who is very, very protective of the people he loves.” That last line doesn’t make him sound less intense, but fair enough. She goes on: “It’s just hard to picture. The only word I can come up with is unimaginable. You know, with certain people you hear something and go, ‘I can see that.’ But this isn’t that.” These are supportive words granted to someone who once changed a tattoo that read “Winona forever” to “Wino forever.”
