Can you hear me now?
As promised the MTA unveiled wireless service in six underground subway stations today at noon.
Only AT&T and T-Mobile customers can freely (obnoxiously)
chat on their cell phones for now, but TransitWireless, the company
which facilitated the service, promises that Verizon will soon be on
board.
It cost a reported $200 million to provide the service, and the cash-strapped MTA contributed in no way financially.
As of today, the stations with cell phone service are:
A, C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
L station at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street
C, E station at Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street
1, 2, 3 station at Seventh Avenue and West 14th Street
F, M station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street
L station at Sixth Avenue and West 14th Street
The MTA promises it will be unveiled to 30 more stations within the next
12 months, including Times Square, Herald Square and Columbus Circle.
Transit Wireless expects to provide service to all the 271 underground
stations within four years.
