Woman dead, husband hurt in devastating house blaze

An elderly woman is dead and her husband is in critical condition after an early morning fire ripped through a Capilano-area home yesterday.

Desperate cries for help from the burning bungalow at 106 Avenue and 57 Street prompted a neighbour to call 911 shortly after 1 a.m.

The blaze was battled by 17 units, and took just under two hours to control, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokesman Tim Wilson said. Though the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, investigators say it began in a bedroom on the northeast side of the basement.

Damages are estimated at $425,000. Though firefighters attempted to protect homes on either side, neighbouring buildings sustained $20,000 in damages. The home was completely destroyed in the blaze, Wilson said.

The man was found outside the home, and the woman was found dead inside. Both the victim and survivor are in their 80s.

The deceased has not yet been identified.
