Woman in coma after botched online transaction

An Ottawa woman who offered jewelry for sale online was critically injured after being thrown from or dragged by a car Monday night.

Police said a 31-year-old woman met a prospective buyer in the city’s east end Monday night after posting an ad online.

Shortly after 9 p.m., city police responded to a 911 call for a report of a woman being dragged by a vehicle on Plainhill Drive. The victim suffered critical injuries, including skull fractures and facial injuries and was taken to hospital, where she is in a medically-induced coma due.

Police said a white or silver sports car was seen speeding from the scene.

The jewelry was “fairly expensive, in the hundreds of dollars,” said Staff Sgt. Don Sweet.

Because an investigation is underway, police are not disclosing what the item was, how much the woman was selling it for or which website the woman advertised the item on.

“We already have her computer and we’ll be looking for cellphone records, and closed circuit television,” he said.

Anyone with information in this incident should call 613-236-1222 ext. 5116.
