Woman may lose ‘fingers and toes’ because of the cold

An Edmonton woman may have froze to death in the city’s west end Sunday afternoon were it not for a passerby who flagged down a police vehicle.

Police say the passerby discovered the woman lying on the ground in between two dumpsters near 65 Avenue and 177 Street and the officer carried her into his patrol car to keep her warm.

The officer placed his jacket and an emergency blanket over the woman who was suffering from hypothermia.

“From my understanding, she may lose some fingers and toes,” said police spokeswoman Karen Carlson.

Police haven’t confirmed if the woman was homeless, but they do say the case isn’t considered suspicious.

The woman was rushed to the Misericordia hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
