Women love the security of home ownership, maintenance not so much: Survey

Women love the financial security of owning their own houses.

A national poll of 1,000 women conducted by TD Canada Trust shows financial security was the biggest benefit of home ownership, followed by having a garden and a private space of their own.

When it comes to buying a house, the poll found 98 per cent of women said cost was the biggest factor. The neighbourhood was a close second at 97 per cent and security a close third at 96 per cent.

More women in Atlantic Canada than any other region preferred a house over a condo, duplex or townhouse.

And 70 per cent of the women polled in this region listed the commute to work as an important factor in their decision to buy a house.

But what sucks most about owning a house? Women said maintenance, repairs and yard work were the big downsides.
