Women’s baseball exhibit not, ahem, well rounded

No woman has played in the major leagues, but that didn’t prevent baseball’s Hall of Fame from opening a dazzling new exhibit devoted exclusively to women.

And get this: Officials at the Hall in Cooperstown, N.Y., say the new exhibit has become one of — if not the most — popular attraction they have. It’s called Diamond Dreams: Women in Baseball at the Hall of Fame.

It’s a 600-sq. ft. area that features women in three segments — On the Field, In the Office and In the Stands.

On the Field focuses on the women competing in baseball, including some in men’s leagues. In the Office highlights the roles of female owners and executives. In the Stands offers info on the roles of female fans as well as women who’ve worked in baseball as broadcasters and public-address announcers.

There is, however, no salute to the women who have flashed their breasts to players from the stands.

“There should be,” former outfielder Henry Rodriguez told me. “It happens a lot, especially in Chicago. I’d look up in the crowd and there was always some chick showing her boobs. I don’t know if they think they’re attracting you that way or if they just do it for fun, maybe to inspire you. Baseball will never talk about that stuff, but it happens a lot, take my word for it. Too bad I couldn’t take any pictures. I would try to donate them to the Hall if I did. Those women belong in the Hall. The Hall would be more interesting if the flashers were recognized.”

Anyway, there is a section in the exhibit devoted to baseball’s first female PA announcer, Sherry Davis, the voice of the San Francisco Giants from 1992 through 1999. She was fired after the Giants left Candlestick Park, but her legacy lives.

• B.C. has complained to the CFL about Montreal’s Anwar Stewart, claiming the Alouettes’ lineman deliberately rolled onto the ankle of Lions pivot Dave Dickenson well after a throw last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Montreal has complained to the CFL about B.C.’s Carl Kidd, claiming the Lions’ linebacker punched the Als’ Ian Allen immediately after Saturday’s game.

• Family stuff:

• Wayne Gretzky’s son has been recruited by former NHLer J.P. Parise to play on a high-school hockey team in Faribault, Minn. Ty Gretzky is a 6-foot, 155-pound forward wishing to play and attend school away from the presure that would surround him in Phoenix, where his legendary father coaches the NHL’s Coyotes.
