The bishop of the Diocese of Worcester said he is asking for forgiveness after being arrested last weekend for drunken driving.
Bishop Robert McManus said Monday that he made “a terrible error in judgment” by getting behind the wheel after having alcohol with dinner Saturday evening. He was arrested in Narragansett, R.I.
“There is no excuse for the mistake I made, only a commitment to make amends and accept the consequences of my action,” McManus said in a statement posted on the diocese’s website. “More importantly, I ask forgiveness from the good people whom I serve, as well as my family and friends, in the Diocese of Worcester and the Diocese of Providence.”
McManus has served as Worcester’s bishop since 2004.
