World champion Goergl leads downhill training

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland – Elisabeth Goergl was fastest in Wednesday’s training run for a World Cup downhill race on the wind-swept Corviglia course.

After a 90-minute delay for calmer conditions, the downhill world champion timed one minute 48.27 seconds.

World Cup overall leader Lindsey Vonn of the United States finished more than 2 1/2 seconds behind in 28th place after testing new skis.

Elena Fanchini of Italy was second fastest, 0.39 seconds back. Julia Mancuso of the U.S. trailed Goergl by 0.67 in third.

Defending overall champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany was 1.07 behind in fifth. She won the downhill when it was last raced here two years ago.

The downhill is scheduled for Saturday, with super-combined events Friday and Sunday.
