Worst of storm blowing out of town, but icy conditions make commute home tough

Here comes the sun. Seriously.

Today’s wintry mess has started blowing out of town and by mid-day Tuesday, the sun should he shining. At most, the city will get an inch into the night. If that.

That doesn’t mean the commute home will be easy – city streets are still icy and the further north you go, the more snow you will see. But – get this – so far city subways and commuter rails are reporting “good service.” Buses? Not so much. See the MTA’s website for updates and specific line info.

This is the forecast for Manhattan, as of 3 p.m.:

Afternoon: Freezing rain and sleet likely. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation. Additional ice accumulation around a trace. Highs in the upper 20s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of precipitation 70 percent.
Tonight: Snow likely. Snow accumulation around an inch. Lows in the lower 20s. Northeast winds around 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy in the morning…then becoming mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 30s. North winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
Tuesday Night: Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 20s. North winds around 10 mph.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Highs around 30. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.

To give you an idea of the variations, New Haven, Conn. has up to 3 inches on the ground, and is expecting maybe another inch.

And in case any of you boo-hoo, thank your lucky stars you’re not in Boston. The home of The Yankees’ arch-enemies, The Redsox, was socked again with eight inches to a foot of snow.
