Wrong place and time for T fare-evader

Entering Park Street Station during his commute Wednesday, MBTA’s General Manager Rich Davey saw a man climbing over the glass gate without paying.

“At first I was looking at him and thought, ‘Is he going to actually make it over the gate? It’s a pretty tall gate,’” Davey said. “We had a discussion and he left and went to buy a Charlie Card, hopefully.”

Davey didn’t turn the man in or tell him he’s the GM.

“I yelled at him to get back down and to pay his fare,” Davey said of the incident, which was caught by a security camera.

There is a $15 fine for first-time offenders. Davey said they might lower the 18-month period violators have to pay.

“Other transit agencies charge $150, some fines are $200,” he said. “I think that acts as an enormous deterrent; $15, not so much.”
