WTA roundup: Bertens rolls into Palmero quarters

Top-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands cruised into the quarter-finals of the Palermo (Italy) Ladies Open, routing Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-1 in the second round Thursday.

In her first-round match, Bertens dropped just one game against Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze. Against Krunic, Bertens came through in the big moments, converting all three of her break points and saving three of Krunic’s four break chances.

Next up for Bertens is a matchup with Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, who pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4) win over Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.

The tournament’s third seed, Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia, also was upset Thursday, falling 6-4, 6-4 to the Netherland’s Arantxa Rus.

Rus’ quarter-final foe will be Spain’s Paula Badosa, who topped Hungary’s Fanny Stollar 6-1, 6-3.

Baltic Open

American Bernarda Pera advanced to her second quarter-final in as many weeks, rallying past Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 in Jurmala, Latvia.

Pera reached the semifinals last week in Lausanne, Switzerland, matching her best result of the year. She also got the semis at Prague, Czech Republic, in early May.

Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic earned a quarter-final matchup with Pera by beating Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea 6-0, 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Anastasia Potapova of Russia topped Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Potapova next will face Romania’s Irina Bara, who got past Russia’s Valentyna Ivakhnenko 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-1.
