The New York Yankees traded left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb to the Milwaukee Brewers for first baseman prospect Garrett Cooper on Thursday, as first reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
Webb made his major-league debut this season, appearing in seven games out of the bullpen for the Yankees. In six innings pitched, he allowed three earned runs on three hits with four walks.
The 26-year-old was called up at the end of June amidst the Yankees’ struggles with injuries and bullpen consistency. In 21 games in triple-A during the 2017 season, Webb was 3-1 with a 3.24 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched.
In return, Cooper provides the Yankees get another option at first base, which has been a problem spot this year. With Greg Bird battling injury problems, Chris Carter provided little before he was released. New York was facing a depth chart after the All-Star break that was headed by rookie Ji-Man Choi and supported by struggling utility infielder Rob Refsnyder and backup catcher Austin Romine.
Cooper has been absolutely ripping it up in triple-A this season, batting .366 with 17 home runs and 82 RBI in just 75 games. Don’t be surprised if he is in the MLB lineup within the coming weeks.
