A young man was struck and killed by an Orange line train Monday afternoon at Ruggles Station, MBTA police said.

Trains service between Jackson and Haymarket stations was suspended for nearly two hours after the man, who was trespassing in the southbound side of the station in an area commonly referred to travelers as “the pit,” was hit by an incoming train around 2:40 p.m., MBTA Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained from being hit.

“It’s important to note that no foul play is suspected,” Sullivan said.

Police are withholding the victim’s name pending notfication of his family.

The station is nearby Northeastern University, but the victim is not believed to be a college student, WBZ reported.

Sullivan said transit police would review footage of the scene as part of an investigation into the death.
