“Scratchy” the shark made a splash this morning when he was detected off Cape Cod and announced as the first shark of the season.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, according to CBS Boston, found the great white shark swimming off of Monomoy Island.

Scratchy was first tagged last August, but according to CBS Boston the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries first identified Scratchy in August of 2014. The shark’s name comes from the multitude of seal scratches on his body.

The AWSC’s Shark Cove receiver reportedly detected the 13-foot shark. Sharky was one of 19 sharks researches tagged last year off the Massachusetts coast.
